Fare thee well
My stalwart friend
You’ve sensed the truth
You’re coming to your end

Know this now
What you’ve held true
Shall serve me well
I’ve taken it from you

Your clouded eyes
And twisted scowl
A wretched form
A sense of something foul

Impeached from you
Now must emerge
A loving child
A creature of the Earth

In the Morning
When the light begins to break
I’ll be gone
Some untold miles away

Tell me child
Now do you see
The innocence
Of life ahead of thee

Cleansed of deed
And blemished not
With senses freed
And purity of thought

A tiny treasure
Burnished gold
Took up the stain
And polished what was old

In the Morning
When the light begins to break
I’ll be gone
Some untold miles away

Notes
I would like to lead off with the disclaimer that my current mood isn’t bleak like the words of this song. My fingers plucked out the minor strains of a murder ballad, and I had to concoct lyrics to accommodate the sound. Trouble was, I didn’t have anybody to kill. So I began to think of life transitions as a kind of a murder. One has to do away with a previous version of himself in order to move on. We steal the life and experience right out from under our previous incarnations in order to better ourselves. In so doing, we might inadvertently develop some malice toward the ways we used to be, or the ways we’re trying not to be any more. These were the feelings that I was attempting to channel in this song. It is a ballad for the death of one version of me, so that another version may live. I actually feel great about it, and would never have thought about it in these terms. But the song wanted what the song wanted, so today I committed a bit of a murder. Enjoy.

The song has a slightly medieval feel and most of the literature of the middle ages is about traveling, quests or some form of movement. The concept that it is death to one’s former self and rebirth at the beginning of a new day, “when the light” finds things changed appeals to me. It is also a beautiful song
